One Billion Steps Albuquerque has three main goals in mind, ultimately with the vision to create a stronger and healthier City that fosters stronger connections and ignites hope around what else is possible in our great City.
Walking is one of the simplest, most accessible ways to improve health.
Research shows walking side-by-side fosters openness and connection in ways sitting across a table often doesn’t.
A billion steps is a bold, shared target that brings us together—feeling like we can accomplish anything.
Walking is one of the simplest, most accessible ways to improve health. By encouraging everyone "willing and able" to take more steps, we’re reducing stress, lowering healthcare costs, and giving people more energy and vitality to enjoy life and give back to their community.
Depending on the size of your company or organization, we welcome everyone to join this grassroots-powered, not-for-profit community campaign in Albuquerque, NM.
It is going to take all of us across Albuquerque to reach 1 billion steps, one step at a time
1 Billion Steps Albuquerque is a community-wide health initiative produced by the Del Norte Rotary Club. Our shared goal is for Albuquerque residents to collectively walk 1 billion steps by the end of the campaign. Using step-tracking technology already built into most smartphones and smartwatches, participants can easily track their activity, contribute to the city’s progress, and join friendly competitions with workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, and families.
Steps are a universal, easy-to-measure marker of movement and good health. Unlike pounds lost or calories burned, steps are inclusive—almost anyone of any age, fitness level, or background can participate. A billion steps represents a bold but achievable citywide goal that inspires teamwork, accountability, and pride in Albuquerque’s health.
Everyone! Individuals, families, schools, workplaces, nonprofits, gyms, and community groups are all welcome. Individual participation will free, and you can join at any time during the campaign. Whether you take 1,000 steps a day or 20,000, every step counts toward the 1 billion total.
Most smartphones and smartwatches already count your steps automatically. After registering on our official campaign website, you can securely sync your device or log steps manually. The website will display real-time progress, leaderboards, and community milestones while respecting user privacy.
Walking more improves physical health, reduces stress, and boosts energy. Studies show active people are generally happier, less anxious, and more likely to volunteer and give back to their communities. Beyond individual health, this initiative will create a stronger, more connected Albuquerque where we cheer each other on and celebrate collective progress.
The campaign officially launches in January 2026, timed with New Year’s resolutions, and will run until we collectively reach 1 billion steps. Regular community events and check-ins will keep momentum going, and we’ll celebrate milestones along the way. When we cross the finish line of 1 billion steps, a community festival and celebration will be announced.
1 Billion Steps Albuquerque is produced by the Del Norte Rotary Club of Albuquerque, part of Rotary International—a global service organization dedicated to improving communities. The project is also supported by a growing number of local sponsors, businesses, and community leaders who believe in making Albuquerque healthier and stronger.
In addition to walking and logging steps, you can:
Spread the word to family, friends, and coworkers.
Organize a team at your workplace, school, or neighborhood.
Volunteer at events or step-counting meetups.
Sponsor the campaign as a business or nonprofit partner.
Every contribution—big or small—moves our city closer to 1 billion steps!
